Know Dementia and Kenagi Academy of Martial Arts teamed up on Monday 3rd February for an ‘Armchair Karate’ Session, where the participants were given an introduction to the world of Martial Arts, from the comfort and safety of a chair.

The weekly ‘Sporting Moments’ cafe held by the charity is designed to give the group and their carers a fun, action filled morning filled with sports such as Badminton, Curling and Table Tennis. In the session, they were shown how to punch and block, as well as leaning their first ‘Kata’.

Everyone had an enjoyable time, with many remarking that they never expected to be able to learn Karate. Sensei Brian Redman of Kenagi said that “it was an amazing morning” and that he enjoyed bringing his sport to a new audience.

The event was well supported by the community, especially Caroline Paul of the Coop Community Partnership (and ex-editor of this very magazine!), the Little Tea House for their donations of cake, as well as local companies such as R Knight Maintenance, HITS Facilities Management and Crawley Carpet Warehouse who have donated to Kenagi to help run these sessions for free for local charities and community groups.
