Tribute to Eileen Setchfield (1932-2021) and Terry Setchfield (1933-2022)

Eileen and Terry Setchfield moved to Southwater in 1972. They bought the village newsagents from Mr & Mrs Clay who owned the shop for many years.

The shop was open every day except Christmas Day. The newspaper bundles would be delivered around 4am and “marked up” ready for delivery. Over the years there were many paper boys, and later, paper girls. Out in all weathers, on their bikes.

Well liked by her customers, Eileen loved her shop and would often be found singing as she filled the shelves. She always had a smile for those who came in; customers from the village would walk down for their paper, others would stop in on their way to work in the early morning. Bright shop lights shining out onto a very quiet Worthing Road.

Terry built up a very large delivery area, reaching Denne Park, Christs Hospital, West Grinstead, Shipley all the way to the Selsey Arms, delivering to many people in isolated areas who were very thankful for his services and for the bread (from Tony the Baker) and groceries he would take with him.

After 35 years of serving in the area. Terry and Eileen finally closed A&E Setchfield Newsagents. Both will missed by so many.
